In this unit we discussed the importance of knowing your students’ needs, interests, and motivation to learn English. We also emphasized the importance of knowing how your students learn best, what expectations they have towards you, their teacher, and what methodology they prefer in class. One way to obtain that information is to give a questionnaire at the beginning of a course. Your task is to complete this questionnaire that reflects the following items:
1. Reasons and motivation for learning English:
Example: How long have you studied English?
(Write two more questions to find out your students’ motivation, intrinsic or extrinsic, for learning English.)
1.
2.
2. Learning styles:
Example: What are your favorite activities to learn English?
a. Watching a video (visual)
b. Listening to the radio or to music (auditory)
c. Doing textbook exercises (kinesthetic)
(Add three more items to the list. Indicate if the activity is visual, kinesthetic, or auditory)
3. Teacher’s roles:
Example: What do you expect from the teacher?
a. To have complete control of the class (controller)
b. To tell you what to do and how to do it (organizer)
(Add three more items to the list. Indicate the teacher’s role)
4. Teaching methodology:
Example: How do you learn best?
a. Translating words or sentences (grammar translation)
b. Repeating and memorizing words (audio-lingual)
(Add two more items to the list. Indicate the methodology.)
